Governor Markell seeks nominees for Delaware’s
seat on Mid-Atlantic Fisheries Management Council

Governor Markell is seeking nominees for Delaware’s obligatory seat on the Mid-Atlantic Fisheries Management Council (MAFMC).

The MAFMC is responsible for managing fisheries in federal waters that extend from three miles to 200 miles offshore, from the coastal states of New York through North Carolina. The MAFMC manages fish species that are very important to Delaware, such as Summer Flounder and Black Sea Bass.

Governor Markell will submit the applications of 3 qualified nominees for consideration for Delaware’s MAFMC seat. In addition to being Delaware residents, qualified nominees, through their occupational or other experiences, scientific expertise or training, must be knowledgeable and experienced in one or more fields related to the fishery resources within the MAFMC’s geographical oversight. The qualifications required to be considered for nomination are presented in detail in the application kit.

The nominee chosen as Delaware’s Council member shall:

Undergo a background check before being approved as Delaware’s Council member
Serve a 3 year term, with the potential to be reappointed for two additional 3 year terms
Attend 6 MAFMC meetings a year, each meeting typically lasting 4 days and each meeting held in a different MAMFC state
Work collectively with other MAFMC members to achieve the Magnuson-Stevens Act conservation standards
Have all meeting expenses (travel, hotel, meals) reimbursed by MAFMC
Receive a stipend of $474.16/day for every meeting day attended
