Scallops Au Gratin

1 1/2 lbs. scallops
3 TBSP. butter
3 TBSP. flour
1 tsp. salt
Dash white pepper
2 cups milk
1/2 cup breadcrumbs
1/2 cup grated mild cheddar cheese

Saute scallops in butter over moderately low heat for about 15 minutes, stirring frequently to lightly brown all sides. Remove scallops to a buttered baking dish.
Stir flour and seasonings into the butter in which scallops were sauteed.
Add milk and cook until sauce thickens.
Pour the sauce over the scallops.
Top with combined crumbs and cheese.
Bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes.
Serves 6-8.
